Studs Terkel - Working

It seems to me that we as a society are losing touch with each other, people are hiding behind their fences, living life on the internet...and all the while losing our connection to other people.

Facebook is the perfect example of what the fuck is wrong with society, we have gone from real interactions, real conflicts, real connections, real life, to this absurdly antiseptic way of dealing with those of us around us.

This plus the entire anti-intellectual movement we are seeing in the west makes me despair for what lies ahead for mankind.

The fear that I have, and I express now in 2010, is something that Studs Terk wrote of in his monumental book, Working: People Talk About What They Do All Day and How They Feel About What They Do. This book at its core is about human connection...to understand what others experience every day. Not what actors, politicians, or other so called important people are up to...but what normal people experience. What its like to drive a cab, or wait tables etc. I think its time for people to rediscover this classic, as we need it now more than we have ever needed it.

Go to your library, take it out and have a read!

And seriously...fuck facebook...
